Traditional Hummus

Social gatherings with friends are always a lot of fun. With our busy schedules, it seems like weeks pass, without making time to spend with friends…so when we actually have the opportunity to hang out, we take advantage of it. Our last gathering was for the Superbowl; living in San Francisco, the Superbowl was a really big deal. We decided to bring hummus this year, instead of the usual chips and dip. I must say…it was a huge hit, and even better it was quick and easy to make..and very inexpensive as well. We had so much fun, just being surrounded by friends and great food. From now on…we will be making our hummus at home. It is fresh and authentic without any additives, so I know it is healthy! Did you know that hummus was packed with protein. It is a great snack for kids, and always a party favorite.

Ingredients
  • 5 cans of Garbanzo Beans (chic peas)
  • Olive oil
  • 3 TbspTahini
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 Lemon (juice)
  • Salt/Pepper to taste
  • Paprika (garnish)
  • (I made a recipe for a large party. The recipe made approximately 6 cups of hummus. Modify the recipe accordingly)

Instructions
  1. Rinse and drain cans of garbanzo beans and place in food processor with garlic cloves and salt and pepper
  2. With the food processor running, drizzle olive oil through the feed tube until the desired consistency is reached (smooth and creamy)
  3. Pour in the juice of one lemon, making sure not to allow any seeds to get into the mixture
  4. Stop the food processor, add in the tahini, and mix thoroughly again with the food processor
  5. Taste to insure adequate amount of salt and pepper…add as needed.
  6. Place hummus on platter and top with olive oil and paprika to garnish.
  7. Serve with warm pita or pita chips

About Sheena

There are many different facets of interest in my personal and professional life. My passion for baking has developed over the past several years; I love the satisfaction of sharing my delicious treats with friends and family. My sweet tooth, and love of baking is quite contradictory of my profession. I am a dentist, and currently a post-doctoral student, studying a dental specialty. My other interest is health and fitness...again...quite controversial of my baked goods..but, I believe....all things in moderation. I enjoy running and working out, and even making healthy entrees for my husband and I. After following several other food blogs, I decided, that this would be a new hobby. I am passionate about everything I take part in, and hope that you enjoy this blog and that it inspires you to make each day delicious with homemade prepared meals....and desserts :)

  1. There are lots of toppings and variations that are popular in the Middle-East.
Fava beans, tahini, pine nuts, parsley, cumin and boiled eggs to name but a few.

Here’s a nice gallery demonstrating the colorful and delicious touch any hummus deserves:
